the narcissist
appearance
Zelos stands at 5'10'' and has a relatively average build. He is particularly attractive, a fact of which he is very much aware and inclined to exploit when it benefits him, and he takes good care of his appearance. His hair is very long and wavy, and an intense shade of red one could consider close to being unnatural, usually kept back by a headband, although he has been known to tie it up or braid it on occasion. Zelos' eyes are a bright, sky blue.
Typically, Zelos' casual clothes consist of loose-fitting white trousers, a pink coat, a black undershirt and long, black and pink gloves. This is a favourite style of his and has been for some time.
If Zelos were to equip his Cruxis Crystal, he would be able to at will expose a pair of wings. As an angel, Zelos' wings are orange, seemingly made of light.

personality
Zelos is, on the surface, a very flirtatious individual. He will take on any opportunity to flirt with the ladies, even if they express annoyance, and will boast about how much of a ladies' man he is, despite the fact he is now both a married man and a father. There are many aspects of himself that he likes to brag about, including his wealth, his looks, his social status, and ability to get whatever he wants – as a result, he comes across as being very narcissistic. He will also tease, joke, and act playfully perverted, often lightening the mood. Typically, he will seem insincere and carefree, irresponsible and immature.
However, this is simply a mask. Zelos' self-esteem is in truth exceptionally low, and the things he will brag about are the things which, in a rare serious conversation, he in fact thinks of as being of low value. He will speak of his noble peers with scorn, disliking their preoccupation with money and status.
Though not many realise it as a result of the false personality he wears, Zelos is actually a perceptive, sensitive individual, and far more intelligent than he lets on. If the right circumstances present themselves, Zelos can sympathise, empathise and understand the behaviour of others, can give insightful advice and is even quite charitable on occasion – after all, ultimately, his title, status and money mean little to him.
The problem is, Zelos also usually fails to realise that he is such a person, and considers himself a coward, as being worthless as a person, and believes that his existence is ultimately without meaning.
Because he's so used to putting on a false impression and because of his negative self-view, Zelos can be very manipulative, and will simply refuse to believe that people can consider someone like him to be a friend. He will switch sides as a result, claiming that it is for survival, even if it means betrayal. However, if Zelos feels that someone genuinely trusts him... this side of him will weaken and he will feel obliged to make this trust worth it.
It takes a lot to truly win Zelos over, and he doesn't make it easy. He appreciates it when people recognise that he's more than the impression he gives, appreciates those who recognise his jokes and teasing as being jokes and teasing, likes to feel wanted and likes to feel trusted. If someone can show him that they genuinely care, and they can actually convince him of it, he is more likely to open up... but if he feels as though he's said too much, or that he's upset you, he will backtrack and pretend he was joking.

the swordsman
abilities and strengths
Zelos is a talented fighter who can fight with either a sword or a dagger – however, as a result of ingesting a stone called Aionis, he can also use magic. Most of his spells are quite low-level, particularly his healing spells, but he can also use spells in conjunction with his swordsmanship. As a result of carrying an exsphere on him, his physical capabilities have been augmented.
Zelos has his Cruxis Crystal with him at all times, and can presumably go through the angel transformation, which would give him heightened physical capabilities as well as give him the ability to fly and use special, light-based magic. However, he doesn't use it, which is likely due to the effects the Cruxis Crystal would have on him.

weaknesses
Most of Zelos' weaknesses lie in his personality. While he acts confident and self-assured, he really isn't, and while it might not necessarily be obvious at first, if an argument hits home it will cause him genuine pain that will last for quite a while.
Things that can hurt Zelos don't necessarily need to be targeted - even idle comments can hurt him, and he can act erratically and in a self-harming way if this happens.
Zelos has a lot of difficulty forming real friendships. Because he doesn't believe he is a worthy friend, he finds it difficult to understand people wanting to be his friend. However, it's probably something he very much needs, as he is capable of being rather self-destructive.
Finally, because of his negative view on people in general, he can be very bitter, although, aside from the occasional slip, he will hide it. However, because he finds it so difficult to form bonds, he can very much be the traitor.

notable possessions
Cruxis Crystal – a small, round, green gem that he was holding when born, thus showing him to be the Chosen of Tethe'alla. If he wears this without a proper protective crest, it would gradually remove his soul in exchange for power – removing it would cause the mana in his body to go out of control and transform him into a monster. He currently only carries it, and has had no inclination to put it to use thus far.
Exsphere and Key Crest – given to him by the Renegades to augment his physical capabilities in a fight. This provides him with greater strength and endurance than an average human. An Exsphere is essentially a low-level Cruxis Crystal, and the Key Crest is what prevents it from losing control.
Both Exsphere and Cruxis Crystal absorb lives, although Zelos does not realise that this is the case with the Exsphere. This item already contains a stolen life, and this is what gives it its power. He is aware, however, of what equipping the Cruxis Crystal would do to him.

the story
history
Zelos is the former Chosen of Tethe'alla. As the Chosen of the flourishing world, he was of exceptionally high status, living a life of luxury and possessing influential power second only to the King. Rich, well-educated, attractive and powerful, Zelos' life was one, on the surface, that many would envy.
However, his childhood certainly wasn't the most pleasant. He had been born of an unwanted, arranged marriage forced by the Church of Martel. He may have been the Chosen, but neither parent had much interest in him. His father left early on, having an affair with a half-elven woman and having a second child, Zelos' half-sister Seles. Zelos lived with his mother, but was mostly raised by the family butler, Sebastian.
Zelos was constantly at risk of assassination attempts, and many precautions were taken. One attempt, however, came far too close. Seles' mother, who as a half-elf was of the lowest social class of Tethe'alla, wished for her daughter to become the Chosen and obtain everything that came with it. Zelos' mother, Mylene, was caught in the crossfire, and with her dying words told Zelos “you should never have been born.”
The half-elf was put to death for this crime, likely without trial, while Seles was imprisoned in an Abbey. However, Mylene's words would have a lasting effect on Zelos.
Being everything that he was, Zelos was chased after by many girls. However, he was completely aware that they did not care about him, and only cared about the Chosen – the only exception seemed to be a girl from the hidden village of Mizuho, Sheena Fujibayashi. Zelos ended up manipulating most of these girls in one way or another, including convincing them to take his class notes for him. Zelos may have graduated at the top of his class, but the only subject he truly excelled in by himself was mathematics.
At some point, the true nature of the Chosen was revealed. It had long been known that the Chosen bloodline was for the purpose of regenerating the world, restoring mana when the world went into decline. Zelos had even been aware that to do so would result in the Chosen's death. However, a group known as the Renegades brought about the knowledge that Tethe'alla fought for mana with a world lying parallel, Sylvarant, and the world regeneration journey was in fact the process of reversing the flow. To prevent the world from going into decline, Sylvarant must not be allowed to regenerate.
Sheena was sent as an assassin, using the Renegade's technology to travel to the other world. However, after some time it seemed that both her mission and that of the Renegade's had failed. Sheena never returned, and the Tower of Salvation, the symbol of Tethe'alla's prospering, vanished.
To force the continuance of the Chosen's bloodline, Zelos, much like his father before him, was pushed into an arranged marriage by the Church of Martel, his partner assigned to him by Cruxis. Similarly, much of his father's side of the family, including Seles, were also pushed into continuing their bloodlines. Zelos had a daughter, Lifthrasir, who was born with a Cruxis Crystal – the title of Chosen was passed onto her.
At that point, however, the half-elves began to rebel, and the Desians (a large army consisting largely of half-elves, who typically treated humans as cattle, and as tools to be used) who had previously dominated Sylvarant were crossing over to Tethe'alla. Tethe'alla was, in effect, at war with the Desians. With the Desians' technology and power, augmented by the use of exspheres, even Tethe'alla's strongest armies were being pushed down.
While Tethe'alla is still capable of fighting, while Sylvarant had been incapable, the Desians have established control of many of the larger cities, towns and villages. Currently, they have established three ranches, in which they imprison captured humans for the purpose of strengthening their exspheres. The Chosen, Lifthrasir, is currently in hiding, being cared for by the Church of Martel and seperated from her parents. Zelos has separated himself from the firing lines, and is currently on what he claims is a “pilgrimage,” typical of those close to the Church of Martel. He is ultimately trying to disassociate himself from the Church entirely.
Zelos, although he does not care for his wife, and the child was not born from a true love, still does not want his daughter to feel as unwanted as he had, and he does have a soft spot for the small child. After finally learning of her location, he began to make his way to her, in order to celebrate her second birthday with her – in doing so, he would prove to the Pope that he was not a hopeless parent. However, upon his arrival at the Abbey she was 'imprisoned' in, he suddenly found himself somewhere else entirely
